About

An old house,
kept standing

Built in 1908 for the first winter guests, closed for three winters, and rebuilt by hand with what the valley had: stone pine, lime and granite.

The house in 1908

Since 1908

We did not build a new hotel in an old style. We kept an old house standing and asked the valley's craftsmen to finish it.

1908

A guesthouse for the first winter

Forty years after the first English guests spent a winter here, a carpenter's family built a small white house above the lake with eight rooms for skaters and tobogganers.

1950s

Skiers arrive

The Corviglia funicular opened in 1928 and the guests changed: fewer skaters, more skiers. The family added a floor and the larch balconies that are still there.

2016

Closed, then sold

The last of the family retired. The house stood shut for three winters, its sgraffito fading, until Anna and Gian bought it in 2016.

2019

Rebuilt from the valley

Three years of work with craftsmen from the Engadin: stone pine from Zuoz, granite from Andeer, and the sgraffito redrawn by hand. Sixteen rooms instead of eight, and a spa a floor down.

Made in the valley

Three crafts,
seventy kilometres.

Nothing in the house came from further away than Andeer. Most of it came from much closer.

Stone pine

Every room is panelled, floored or beamed in Arve from the forests above Zuoz, planed by a carpenter whose grandfather built the original balconies.

Sgraffito

The wolf's teeth under the eaves and the diamonds around the windows were scratched by hand into wet lime, the way they were in 1908. Two summers of work.

Andeer granite

The spa, the bathrooms and the bar are lined in grey-green granite from the quarry at Andeer, split rough on the outside and polished where you touch it.

Anna & Gian

Gian grew up in Celerina, two kilometres down the valley, and ran the ski school on Corviglia for twenty years. Anna came from Zurich for a winter in 1994 and stayed. They live on the top floor, and one of them is at breakfast every morning.

Ask Gian where the snow is best. Ask Anna anything else.
